Do I Need a Water Softener? An Honest Answer for Sauk Valley Homes
Hard water is not a health problem, and a softener is not always the answer. Here is how to work out whether you actually have one.
If your water tests above about 7 grains per gallon, you have hard water by the standard measure. Whether you need a softener is a different question, and it depends on how far above that line you are and what else is going on in the house.
Start with the part nobody selling equipment likes to lead with. Hardness is not a health problem. The U.S. Geological Survey says it plainly: hardness is not a health concern, but it can be a nuisance. The World Health Organization has gone further and noted that calcium and magnesium in drinking water may actually matter for people who are marginal on both. If somebody tells you hard water is dangerous, they are selling from the wrong page.
What grains per gallon actually means
Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, nothing more exotic than that. Labs report it two ways. Milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate is the scientific unit. Grains per gallon, written gpg, is what the trade uses. One grain per gallon equals 17.1 mg/L. That is the only conversion you need to carry around.

That scale is the USGS classification. Note how low the ceiling is. Very hard begins at 10.5 gpg, and most homes we test in Sterling, Dixon and Rock Falls sit well past it. A reading in the high teens or low twenties is ordinary around here, not alarming.
Why Sauk Valley groundwater runs hard
Geology, and it is not going to change. The water under this part of Illinois moves through limestone and dolomite, and through glacial sand and gravel packed with fragments of the same carbonate rock. Water sitting in carbonate rock dissolves calcium and magnesium out of it. There is no mechanism by which it would not.
Dixon's own Consumer Confidence Report says the city is supplied by seven wells ranging from 1,600 to 1,900 feet deep. Illinois American Water's report for the Sterling district describes the same deep sandstone source. That is the Cambrian-Ordovician system, and in northern Illinois, near where it takes on recharge, the water in it is a calcium magnesium bicarbonate type. That phrase is a chemist's way of saying hard.
For a sense of the magnitude, USGS sampling of the sand and gravel aquifers in McHenry County, in the same glacial and carbonate setting one region east, found a median calcium of 85.9 mg/L and a median magnesium of 44.9 mg/L. Run those through the standard hardness formula and you land near 400 mg/L as calcium carbonate, roughly 23 grains per gallon. Your own well or your own tap may read higher or lower, but that is the neighborhood.
The same rock puts other things in the water
Radium is the tell. It occurs naturally in the deep sandstone and it moves with calcium because it behaves chemically like calcium. The utilities below are in compliance with the federal standard for combined radium, which is 5 pCi/L, and Illinois American Water's Sterling report confirms the water met state and federal drinking water requirements. The independent health guideline used by the EWG Tap Water Database is set far lower than the federal standard. Legal limits and health guidelines are two different lines, and both are worth knowing.

A softener is a cation exchanger, and radium carries two positive charges just as calcium does, so a properly sized softener reduces it as a side effect of doing its main job. How to tell you have a problem before you test anything
- White or grey crust on faucet aerators, shower heads and the kettle element
- Soap that will not lather, and a film that stays on your skin after a shower
- Spots on glassware that come back after every single wash
- Laundry going grey and stiff over a year or two
- A water heater that ticks, pops or rumbles when it fires
- One fixture losing flow while the pressure everywhere else is fine, which is usually a plugged aerator
None of those on its own proves anything. All of them together, in this county, usually does.
What hardness actually costs a household
The most useful work on this is a 2009 study run by Battelle Memorial Institute and funded by the Water Quality Research Foundation. They put appliances and fixtures on softened and unsoftened water side by side, at hardness levels up to 26 grains per gallon, and measured what happened.
- Gas storage water heaters on unsoftened water fell from 70.4 percent to 67.4 percent efficiency at the equivalent of two years of service. The softened units held their rating.
- Tankless gas heaters dropped from 80 percent to 72 percent and needed deliming at the equivalent of 1.6 years.
- Low flow shower heads on hard water clogged badly enough that they could no longer be adjusted to 1.25 gallons per minute after roughly 3,200 gallons. The softened ones finished the test clean.
- Low flow faucet strainers plugged at the equivalent of 19 days of use, mostly with scale that had broken loose from pipe further upstream.
- Dishwashers and washing machines run on 26 gpg water showed visible scale on every interior surface after 30 days of accelerated testing.
Then add soap. Detergent works by surfactant action, and calcium and magnesium bind up the surfactant before it ever reaches the dirt. That is why hard water eats soap, and you pay that tax every time you fill a dispenser.
The plumbing story is slower and less dramatic than the internet suggests. Scale forms where water is heated, so the water heater, the heat exchanger and the fixtures take it first. Cold supply lines in a house rarely close up from hardness alone. Anyone showing you a photo of a pipe choked shut is usually showing you a commercial hot water line.
How to actually test
- Ask your utility first. Some Consumer Confidence Reports list hardness. Sterling's and Dixon's do not at the moment, which is normal and is not a criticism, because hardness is not a regulated contaminant and nobody is required to report it.
- Buy a kit. Test strips get you within a couple of grains, which is enough to know which column you are in. Titration drops are more accurate and still cheap.
- Get a real lab report if you want to make a decision on it. The Illinois State Water Survey runs a home water testing program, and a private lab will give you hardness, iron, manganese, pH and nitrate on one sheet.
- If you are on a private well in Woosung, Grand Detour, Nachusa or Eldena, test every year and include bacteria and nitrate. There is no utility watching your water for you.
Test before you shop, not after. Sizing is arithmetic: hardness in grains per gallon multiplied by gallons used per day gives the grains per day the unit has to handle. Without the hardness number, every other number in the quote is a guess.
When a softener is the wrong answer
This is the section that costs us sales and saves us callbacks.
- Your hardness is under about 7 gpg. Below that you will not get your money back in soap and appliance life, whatever anyone tells you.
- Your real complaint is taste or a chlorine smell. Ion exchange does nothing for either one. That is a carbon problem.
- Your real complaint is orange staining. A softener handles a limited amount of dissolved iron and fouls if you push it past that. Real iron needs a filter built for it, sitting ahead of the softener.
- You have a rotten egg smell. That is hydrogen sulfide, a dissolved gas, and ion exchange does not touch dissolved gases.
- You are worried about nitrate, arsenic or PFAS. Those want reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap, not a softener.
- Someone in the house is on a strict sodium restricted diet and your hardness is very high. A softener trades calcium and magnesium for sodium, and the amount added rises with the hardness. Potassium chloride is one option and a reverse osmosis unit at the sink is usually a better one. That is a conversation for a doctor, not for a salesman.

How do I know if I have hard water?

Does a water softener remove radium?
Ion exchange reduces radium, because radium carries two positive charges and behaves chemically much like calcium, so the resin picks it up for the same reason it picks up hardness. It is a recognized treatment for radium. Local utilities are in compliance with the federal standard of 5 pCi/L, so treat this as a bonus rather than a reason to buy.
Do I need a water softener if I am on city water in Sterling?
