Why Your Well Water Smells Like Rotten Eggs, and How to Find Where It Is Coming From

Hydrogen sulfide has two completely different sources in a Sauk Valley home, and the fix for one does nothing for the other. Here is how to tell them apart.

A rotten egg smell in well water is almost always hydrogen sulfide, a dissolved gas. Your nose is a more sensitive instrument for it than most lab equipment. Penn State Extension notes that most people detect it well below 0.5 milligrams per liter, far too low to be a health problem and more than enough to ruin a glass of water.

The useful question is not what it is but where it comes from. Two sources, two different fixes, and one of them costs almost nothing to rule out.

The sixty second test

Do this after the house has sat quiet for a few hours. Overnight is ideal. The Minnesota Department of Health publishes the same decision tree, and it is the fastest useful diagnosis in residential water.

  1. Go to a bathroom sink that is not filtered. Run the cold tap, smell it, then run the hot and smell that.
  2. Smell in the hot water only. Your well is fine. The problem is inside your water heater, and the next section is your answer.
  3. Smell in both hot and cold, but only at taps downstream of a softener. That points at sulfur bacteria in the softener tank, not at your well.
  4. Smell everywhere, hot and cold, and it fades after the water runs a few minutes. Usually sulfur bacteria colonizing the well or plumbing.
  5. Smell everywhere, just as strong after five minutes of running. That is dissolved hydrogen sulfide coming up out of the aquifer.

Work that list in order rather than jumping to the last line. Step two is a water heater part, not a treatment system, and it is the most common reason a rotten egg call turns out simple.

The magnesium anode rod, which almost nobody has heard of

Every glass lined water heater has a sacrificial anode rod hanging inside the tank, usually magnesium. Its entire job is to corrode so the steel tank does not. It is why a water heater lasts as long as it does.

Magnesium is also a strong reducing agent. Penn State Extension describes the mechanism plainly: in a tank holding water that contains sulfate, the magnesium rod can chemically reduce that sulfate to hydrogen sulfide. The gas is being manufactured inside your water heater out of a mineral that was odorless when it came in the door.

That is why the smell shows up in hot water only, and why it is worst after a week away. Penn State's remedy is to swap the magnesium rod for an aluminum one, which keeps the corrosion protection and stops the reaction. The Minnesota Department of Health lists the same fix, plus disinfecting the tank or raising the thermostat to 160 degrees. Pulling the rod entirely also stops the smell and shortens tank life, so treat that as a last resort.

Anode rod work is water heater work. That belongs to a licensed Illinois plumbing contractor, and it is worth being clear about before anyone sells you a whole house filter for a problem that lives in a tank.

Where the gas comes from in northern Illinois

Hydrogen sulfide in groundwater is biological in origin. Penn State Extension attributes it to sulfur reducing bacteria that feed on small amounts of sulfur in low oxygen groundwater, and notes the problem is most common in wells drilled into acidic bedrock such as shale and sandstone. That is a fair description of what sits under Whiteside, Lee and Ogle counties.

The Illinois EPA notes that deep bedrock aquifers dominate the northern third of the state. Where those aquifers sit sealed under shale and the water has been down there long enough to run out of dissolved oxygen, sulfate reducing conditions are exactly what you would expect. Nothing has gone wrong. It is geology, and it is very old water.

The Illinois EPA describes the result the way we would at a kitchen table: a rotten egg odor, sometimes yellow or black staining, and no health effect from drinking it. What it does do is corrode metal, forming metallic sulfides. That is where the black greasy smears inside a toilet tank come from.

Dissolved gas and sulfur bacteria are not the same problem

This is the distinction that decides whether treatment holds for ten years or six weeks.

What actually removes hydrogen sulfide

Treatment is chosen by measured concentration, not by preference. Penn State Extension and the Minnesota Department of Health draw the lines in nearly the same places, which is reassuring given they worked independently.

Which brings us to the carbon filter question, the one people get wrong most often. Carbon works on hydrogen sulfide by adsorption, and its capacity is both finite and small. Penn State puts the practical ceiling at about 1.0 mg/L. Above that the carbon saturates quickly, the odor breaks through, and the homeowner reasonably concludes that treatment does not work. Carbon did not fail. It was asked to do a job that needed oxidation.

The other quiet failure is a carbon cartridge under the kitchen sink. Sulfide is a whole house problem, and you notice it most in the shower, where the gas comes out of solution hardest. A filter at one tap does nothing for that.

When to test, and what to ask for

Test before you buy anything. Hydrogen sulfide off gasses out of an ordinary sample, so a lab needs a properly preserved bottle and the sample has to move fast. Your county health department can name a certified lab. Ask for hydrogen sulfide, sulfate, iron, manganese and pH on one sheet. Sulfate matters because it is the feedstock for the whole reaction, including the one in your water heater. Iron and manganese matter because an oxidizing filter has to be sized for everything it will be oxidizing at once.

The part that only applies if you are on a private well

If you live in Sterling, Dixon or Rock Falls, your utility samples on a federal schedule and mails you a Consumer Confidence Report every year whether you asked or not. If you live in Woosung, Grand Detour, Nachusa or Eldena, none of that exists. No utility, no sampling schedule, no lab contract, no annual report. Nobody is testing your water. The smell coming out of your tap is the only continuous monitoring you have, and it detects exactly one thing.

Those utilities are in compliance with federal drinking water standards and their own reports say so. The guidelines quoted are the independent health guidelines used by the EWG Tap Water Database, which sit far below the federal legal limits. Legal limits and health guidelines are two different lines, and a homeowner is entitled to know both. Full detection lists are on the town pages for Dixon, Sterling and Rock Falls.

Now look at the last row. The pages for Woosung, Grand Detour, Nachusa and Eldena are short for a reason. That blank is not a clean bill of health. It is an absence of information, and only you can fill it in.

One safety note. Drinking water containing hydrogen sulfide has no health effect, according to the Illinois EPA, but the gas is a different matter in a confined space. If you have a well pit or a sealed pump house and you can smell sulfur when you open it, ventilate before you put your head in.

Why does only my hot water smell like rotten eggs?

Why does my well water smell worse in the morning?

That pattern points at sulfur bacteria rather than dissolved gas. Colonies in the well casing or plumbing produce hydrogen sulfide while water sits still overnight, so the first draw is the worst and the smell eases as water moves. Dissolved hydrogen sulfide from the aquifer stays at the same strength no matter how long you run the tap.

Can a water softener remove a rotten egg smell?

No. Ion exchange trades calcium and magnesium for sodium and does nothing to dissolved gases. A softener can even become the source. The Minnesota Department of Health notes that if the odor shows up only at softened taps, sulfur bacteria in the softener tank are the likely cause, and the unit needs sanitizing rather than replacing.

How do I test my well for hydrogen sulfide in Illinois?

Use a certified laboratory and a properly preserved bottle, because the gas escapes from an ordinary sample before it reaches the bench. Your county health department can point you to one. Ask for hydrogen sulfide, sulfate, iron, manganese and pH together, since sulfate feeds the reaction and iron changes how an oxidizing filter has to be sized.
