Long-term exposure risk: The classic waterborne stomach illnesses.
Private wells aren't chlorinated, so if bacteria get in, from surface water, a cracked casing, heavy rain, nothing kills them before your tap. That's why UV is standard practice on wells: it's a continuous, chemical-free kill step.
Treatment: UV sterilization.
Long-term exposure risk: Not a health hazard at these levels; permanent staining of fixtures and laundry.
Orange-brown staining is dissolved iron; rotten-egg smell is hydrogen sulfide gas. Neither is a major health issue at typical levels, but they wreck fixtures, laundry, and your patience. Air-injection filtration fixes both without chemicals.
Treatment: Air-injection iron & sulfur filter.
Long-term exposure risk: Dangerous specifically to infants: interferes with oxygen in their blood.
Nitrates come from fertilizer and runoff getting into groundwater, a real thing in farm country wells. The hard limit is 10 parts per million because above that it's dangerous for infants, it interferes with oxygen in their blood. RO removes it; boiling actually makes it worse.
Treatment: RO (POU or whole-home).
Long-term exposure risk: Not a health hazard; a money hazard. Scale-killed appliances and early water heater death.
Hardness is calcium and magnesium, not a health problem, but it scales up your water heater, shortens appliance life, spots your dishes, and dries out skin. Sauk Valley water runs very hard, often 20+ grains. A softener fixes it completely.
Treatment: Water softener.
Long-term exposure risk: wells near heavy fertilizer and pesticide use consistently test higher for nitrates (dangerous to infants) and herbicides like atrazine, an endocrine-disruption concern; long-term agricultural chemical exposure keeps appearing in neurological disease research.
These have no taste. The well can taste perfect and carry all of them. Annual testing is the only way to know.
Treatment: carbon for the chemistry, RO at the drinking tap, UV for the biology.
